Associate Professor of Mathematics
Biography
Dr. Gerald Agbegha is an associate professor of mathematics at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC). His teaching career in mathematics started at an elementary school as soon as he left high school. A few weeks after he started, his high school principal lured him away to teach mathematics at the high school he just left. This theme repeated after he obtained his bachelor’s in industrial mathematics from the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria. Not only did the university employ him to teach with his bachelor’s degree, it also offered to sponsor him to obtain his graduate degrees anywhere in the world, no expenses spared. He landed in the USA and obtained the following graduate degrees:
- PhD in operations research from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio
- MS in operations research from Case Western Reserve University
- MS in industrial engineering from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY
He taught at various universities in the U.S. before he gained employment at GGC. Over the years, he has taught various mathematics courses, and on occasion, quantitative aspects of business.
On the research front, Agbegha did pioneering work on automobile transportation using the auto carrier. A landmark paper that he wrote in association with his advisors is in a special issue of Transportation Science: “Agbegha G. Y., Ballou R. H., and Mathur K. Optimizing Auto-Carrier Loading, Transportation Science, Vol. 32, No. 2, (May 1998), pp. 174-188.” This paper has been cited by several researchers over the years. His current research interest is in exploring ways to present statistics as a friendly subject that is accessible to a wider audience.
Agbegha has five grown children and two adorable grandchildren, ages 12 and 5.
