GGC's Dr. Dovile Budryte presents at international conference
Dr. Dovile Budryte, professor of political science, presented at the international conference, Intersections of Oppression: Comparative Historical Analysis of Contemporary Challenges, organized by South Africa's University of Pretoria and the embassies of Lithuania and the Czech Republic in South Africa. Topics discussed included a comparison of various forms of oppression and their legacies as well as Russian aggression against Ukraine as a form of colonialism. GGC's Dr. Reanna Berry receives 2023 Emerald Literati Award
Dr. Reanna Berry, associate professor of accounting and interim chair of the Accounting, Management Information Systems and Finance department, was named an Outstanding Reviewer in the 2023 Emerald Literati Awards for the Journal of Applied Research in Higher Education.
GGC's Dr. Wenlin Michelle Huang named 2023 Governor's Teaching Fellow
Dr. Wenlin Michelle Huang, associate professor of chemistry, has been named a 2023 Governor's Teaching Fellow. The Governor's Teaching Fellows Program was established by Zell Miller, 1991-99 governor of Georgia, to provide the state's higher education faculty with expanded opportunities for developing important teaching skills. The program is offered through the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia.
GGC representatives win award at HAPS Conference
Dr. Caroline Hanson, lecturer of biology, anatomy and physiology, Karen Perell-Gerson, professor of exercise science, Dr. Jerome Lee, director of Academic Enhancement, and Joshua Webb, '23, exercise science, received an award for their poster entitled "Student Participation and Experience in Peer Supplemental Instruction for Anatomy and Physiology at a Minority-serving Institution," at the recent Human Anatomy and Physiology Society Annual Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Dr. Dovile Budryte, professor of political science, delivered the keynote address, “A Decolonizing Moment: Vicarious Identification with Ukraine in the Baltic States and Beyond,” during the international 15th Conference on Baltic Studies in Europe, which recently was held at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania.
GGC student and alumni complete training at LabCentral/Career Forge
Biology alumni Andre Parmer, '23, and Deisy Garcia, '23, and biology major Eleana Portillo, '25, attended three weeks of training at LabCentral/Career Forge in Boston, Massachusetts. They gained hands-on biotechnology laboratory skills and training on presenting research data.
GGC's Dr. MaryBeth Chrostowsky selected for Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program
Dr. MaryBeth Chrostowsky, lecturer of anthropology, has been selected for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program for 2023-2024. This award will enable her to teach and conduct research in sociology at Uganda Martyrs University in Kampala, Uganda, beginning in August. She is the fourth member of the Georgia Gwinnett College faculty to be selected for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.
GGC's Drs. Lee Kurtz and Omar Villanueva selected for change team cohort
Dr. Lee Kurtz, professor of biology and Biological Sciences Department chair, and Dr. Omar Villanueva, associate professor of chemistry and Chemistry Department chair, were selected for the year-long National Science Foundation ADVANCE-funded Latina THRIVE Partnership’s inaugural, chair-led, change team cohort. Based at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, this program supports 20 Hispanic-serving institutions’ STEM chairs and their change teams in developing and enacting a plan that promotes a psychologically healthy workplace where faculty, especially Latinas, thrive.
GGC's Dr. Alesha Harris selected to serve on CCMH advisory board
Dr. Alesha Harris, director of Counseling and Psychological Services, has been selected to serve on the advisory board for the Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH). Based at Pennsylvania State University, CCMH is an international practice-research network of over 750 college and university counseling centers that brings together clinical work, research and technology. She will serve a three-year term. School of Education team wins D2L Excellence Award
Dr. Samantha Mrstik, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, Dr. Rebecca Cooper, professor of curriculum and instruction, and Dr. Amy Farah, associate professor of teacher education, recently won the D2L Excellence Award. The honor recognized the team's work in developing the Technology Integration Project, which was designed to prepare the School of Education's (SOE) majors to teach in a virtual environment.
