Dr. Caroline Hanson, lecturer of biology, anatomy and physiology, Karen Perell-Gerson, professor of exercise science, Dr. Jerome Lee, director of Academic Enhancement, and Joshua Webb, '23, exercise science, received an award for their poster entitled "Student Participation and Experience in Peer Supplemental Instruction for Anatomy and Physiology at a Minority-serving Institution," at the recent Human Anatomy and Physiology Society Annual Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Dr. Dovile Budryte, professor of political science, delivered the keynote address, “A Decolonizing Moment: Vicarious Identification with Ukraine in the Baltic States and Beyond,” during the international 15th Conference on Baltic Studies in Europe, which recently was held at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania.

Biology alumni Andre Parmer, '23, and Deisy Garcia, '23, and biology major Eleana Portillo, '25, attended three weeks of training at LabCentral/Career Forge in Boston, Massachusetts. They gained hands-on biotechnology laboratory skills and training on presenting research data. 

Dr. MaryBeth Chrostowsky, lecturer of anthropology, has been selected for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program for 2023-2024. This award will enable her to teach and conduct research in sociology at Uganda Martyrs University in Kampala, Uganda, beginning in August. She is the fourth member of the Georgia Gwinnett College faculty to be selected for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.

Dr. Lee Kurtz, professor of biology and Biological Sciences Department chair, and Dr. Omar Villanueva, associate professor of chemistry and Chemistry Department chair, were selected for the year-long National Science Foundation ADVANCE-funded Latina THRIVE Partnership’s inaugural, chair-led, change team cohort. Based at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, this program supports 20 Hispanic-serving institutions’ STEM chairs and their change teams in developing and enacting a plan that promotes a psychologically healthy workplace where faculty, especially Latinas, thrive. 

Dr. Alesha Harris, director of Counseling and Psychological Services, has been selected to serve on the advisory board for the Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH). Based at Pennsylvania State University, CCMH is an international practice-research network of over 750 college and university counseling centers that brings together clinical work, research and technology. She will serve a three-year term. Advisory board members provide expert opinion on best practices, trends and challenges within the field of college student mental health to CCMH and Penn State staff and engage in decision

Dr. Samantha Mrstik, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, Dr. Rebecca Cooper, professor of curriculum and instruction, and Dr. Amy Farah, associate professor of teacher education, recently won the D2L Excellence Award. The honor recognized the team's work in developing the Technology Integration Project, which was designed to prepare the School of Education's (SOE) majors to teach in a virtual environment. It includes emphasis on understanding relationships between technology and teaching. As a result, SOE's preservice teachers became more prepared to teach in various online

Sophia Beers, '24, nursing, received a $1,000 Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarship for Baccalaureate Nursing Students from the Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association.

Emily Mandujano, '24, nursing, was named a Johnson & Johnson’s Our Race to Health Equity Diversity Scholar and received a $1,000 scholarship through the Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association.
 

Dr. Matthew K. Robison, associate provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, received ACPA-College Student Educators International’s 2023 Esther Lloyd Jones Award for professional service.
