The Southern Sociological Society (SSS) elected Dr. Marni Brown, associate professor of sociology for the School of Liberal Arts, as the vice president for the 2022-2023 membership year. Brown will become vice president-elect at the organization's Executive Committee Meeting scheduled for April 2021 in New Orleans, Louisiana. In this new role, Brown will oversee elections, nominations and conference programming. Affiliated with the group since 2007, she served SSS as an elected executive committee member for two years and as the local arrangements chair for the 2018 meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia. Brown also is the president of Sociologists for Women in Society’s South Chapter.

Recently, Brown released her latest book, "Frameworks of Inequality: An Intersectional Perspective," co-edited with Dr. Mahala Dyer Stewart. Readers will learn how systems of oppression lead to and exacerbate the way inequality impacts social experiences, especially with regard to access, or lack of access, afforded to particular individuals or groups.

Brown also published a blog post, "The Importance of Cultural and Social Awareness in Building LGBTQI Families," as she grappled with the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and racial social unrest happening in the U.S. at the same time.
