Richard Campbell
Biography
Starting at a young age, Richard Campbell has loved reading and writing, influenced most by his mom (a former elementary school teacher) and grandfather (a railroad switchman and brakeman who wrote often and taught Campbell the importance of books and sweat).
After a false start in print journalism at the University of Georgia, Campbell earned a degree in English education and taught ninth grade remedial English for four years. He taught English Composition I and II and study skills classes for roughly 15 years at the college level before taking a mental break and working for a non-profit that helped people living at or below the poverty level.
He started teaching again in the summer of 2021, but found that his real joy was in helping others on a more individual level. Now, he is a writing tutor in the Academic Enhancement Center and can't wait to help students improve their writing.
In his personal life, Campbell is possibly the only Englishy person in Georgia who has twice been certified to operate a forklift … and loved it. Also, in the summer of 2023, his wife and he attempted a southbound thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. They did not complete it, but met some amazing people, met many difficulties (including a month of rain in Maine, flash floods in Vermont and an unnerving experience with dehydration) and came back home very changed people.
