Get to Know GGC: Mathematician shares her insight on Pi

By: Corey Mobley
Happy Pi Day!
Mathematicians around the world celebrate Pi (π) every March 14 to highlight the significance of mathematics and its impact on our world. Inside GGC spoke with Dr. Alvina Atkinson, professor of mathematics in the School of Science and Technology, to explore the importance of math and what Pi Day means to her.
Inside GGC: What is Pi?
Atkinson: Pi (3.1415926…) represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. In other words, the distance around any circle is always equal to Pi times its diameter. This relationship holds true for every circular object we encounter, whether we realize it or not. Circles are everywhere in our daily lives, from the wheels on a car to the shape of a clock face, making Pi is a fundamental constant in mathematics.
Inside GGC: Pi Day highlights the importance of math and its impact on our world. How can professors in non-math disciplines incorporate mathematical concepts into their teaching?
Atkinson: Pi applies to geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and various fields of science, but math, in general, is relevant to almost any subject. For example, if a student is planning an event, they might use math to budget expenses, calculate food quantities to minimize waste or determine seating arrangements. Professors outside of mathematics can integrate more real-world applications into their teaching, helping students see how math influences everyday decision-making and problem-solving.
Inside GGC: Pi is an infinite number. Is there anything you have learned in your career that you will use infinitely?
Atkinson: One lesson I’ve learned and will use infinitely is the importance of kindness. Treating everyone with kindness is essential because you never know what someone is going through. I truly believe that the kindness you put into the world comes back to you, creating a cycle of positivity and respect.
Inside GGC: Many people celebrate Pi Day by eating their favorite pie. What is your favorite pie?
Atkinson: I love my mother’s lemon meringue pie.
