Participate in GGC’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
Georgia Gwinnett College’s (GGC) Student Outreach and Service team invites faculty and staff to engage with and promote an exciting opportunity for the campus community, GGC’s MLK Day of Service and Keynote event 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17.
This important day provides a unique chance for GGC to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while fostering service, reflection and civic responsibility among our students and colleagues.
Event details
- Date: Friday, Jan. 17, 2025
- Keynote location: Student Center, LVIS
- Volunteer lunch location: Building B, Belonging Center
- Service project check-in: Building B, Atrium
Schedule
- 10:15 a.m.: Doors open to LVIS (seating is first-come, first-served)
- 11 a.m.: Keynote Address by Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz (prompt start at 11 a.m.)
- 12:15 p.m.: Complimentary lunch for volunteers in the Belonging Center
- 1-4 p.m.: Hands-On Service Projects (on- and off-campus)
Event overview
- Keynote speaker: Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz, educator, author and a daughter of Malcolm X, will deliver an inspiring address on “The Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” RSVP to attend the keynote.
- Volunteer for MLK Day of Service: Participants will have opportunities to engage in service projects that embody Dr. King’s vision of collective action, justice and equality. Sign up for a service project.
How you can get involved
- Promote participation: Encourage students and colleagues to attend the keynote and participate in service projects.
- Incorporate into classes: Faculty can integrate the event into their syllabi by:
- Adjusting class schedules to allow attendance.
- Offering extra credit for participation.
- Assigning reflections on the keynote themes.
- Join us: Faculty and staff are welcome to attend and engage in service projects alongside students.
Tracking participation
The Student Outreach and Service team will separately track all attendees for the keynote and service projects. Faculty and staff can request this information to help track student involvement or assess participation for class-related activities.
Why this matters
This event aligns with GGC’s mission to foster engaged citizens who contribute to their communities. It is also an opportunity for us to connect our academic and professional roles to Dr. King’s vision of social justice, equality and service.
