INSIDE GGC
The English Language Institute at GGC celebrates milestone
The English Language Institute (ELI), a University System of Georgia-approved campus-based English as a Second Language program at Georgia Gwinnett College, welcomes its largest class in the program’s history.
Fifty-seven students were accepted to the fall session A, and more than 30 attended its New Student Orientation last month. Nearly 20 of those students are attending on F-1 student visas. The other students are mostly U.S. citizens and permanent residents for whom English is a second language. Combined with the 23 returning ELI students, the fall session A includes 50 students representing China, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, Colombia, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire and Pakistan.
Since its establishment in 2015, the ELI had been a partnership between Internationalization and Student Success. Student Success managed the curricular aspects of the program (teaching and instructors) while Internationalization managed the co-curricular aspects, including enrollment management and immigration advisement.
Effective August 2024, the curricular home of the Institute has moved to the School of Liberal Arts. Aligning the ELI with the School of Liberal Arts is intended to promote increased interdisciplinary collaboration and support. This strategic move will maximize resources, enriching our students’ academic and personal development.
The ELI is a vital component of Georgia Gwinnett College, contributing to the college’s diversity and dynamism. It plays a pivotal role in preparing students for academic success, with many ELI graduates continuing their education at GGC. The Institute’s presence greatly enriches the college’s community and contributes to its inclusive and thriving academic environment.
