Georgia Gwinnett College to mark Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day with service event
In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and to honor his commitment to service, Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) will host a Brunch & Blankets event from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., Jan. 20, in the lobby of Building 1000 on GGC’s campus.
“For this event, we are soliciting donations of various personal care products to put together packages to donate to the community,” said GGC’s assistant director of community engagement and service Nury Lizeth Castro.
Castro said that donated items will be sent in packages to the Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministry, a community non-profit organization which provides food and other necessities to those in need in the Lawrenceville and Dacula communities. The ministry will, in turn, donate the packages to members in the community.
In addition to assembling donation packages, Castro and GGC students will create “no sew” blankets and friendship bracelets and write letters to young patients at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
“We have a great relationship with the Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministry and have worked closely with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for past initiatives,” said Castro. “This project is an exciting opportunity to work with our partners, to serve our community and to recognize Dr. King’s legacy of service.”
How you can help
Citing a specific need for individually wrapped toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soaps and deodorant, Castro and her students are welcoming these donations in the lobby of GGC’s Wellness Center, Building F, located at 55 Collins Industrial Way, until 9 a.m., Jan. 20.
