Georgia Gwinnett College’s FAFSA center helps hundreds
Since opening the Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Center at the end of April, more than 300 students have stopped by to seek help and ask questions.
“We have had a pretty steady number of students coming to our help center in the past month,” said Kimberly Jordan, executive director of Financial Aid Services at GGC. “About two-thirds of them needed help starting or completing their FAFSA form.”
The remaining students, however, came to ask questions.
“Our FAFSA Completion Center has opened new doors for us to really get to know students in person,” said Jordan. “We’ve made stronger connections with them and because of that, our students are getting a more personalized experience as we help them navigate the process.”
The FAFSA is critical in determining how much federal aid eligibility students will have for their education. The U.S. Department of Education released a streamlined FAFSA form at the end of 2023 with the goal of simplifying the process, but delays in releasing it has continued to create challenges and further setbacks.
While most students that came to the center are attending GGC, there were others from other schools and the community at large.
“We have had a number of people stop in and ask for help, even though they may be attending another school,” added Jordan. “And that’s okay with us. We’re dedicated to helping students through this so they can start or continue their academic journey.”
GGC Financial Aid Services must have the student’s completed financial aid file, including a FAFSA form and all requested documentation, by July 6 for students to receive notification of their award in time to make tuition payments.
The GGC FAFSA Completion Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, through June 30. These days and hours are subject to change based on need. The center is located on campus in Building E, Room 2161.
