Presidential debates: Do they really influence voters today?

Millions of Americans are expected to tune in at 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, to watch the first presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. The debate will take place in Atlanta. The question is, will this debate influence how people vote in November?

Dr. David Felsen of Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC), has taught U.S. government, holds a doctorate from Oxford University in the United Kingdom, and has lectured on American and global politics in the U.S. and abroad. He believes that this presidential debate will be as relevant as past debates.

Second annual GGC Juneteenth celebration focuses on fellowship, family, camaraderie

Georgia Gwinnett College’s (GGC) Juneteenth Celebration embraced a spirit of unity, emphasizing fellowship, family and camaraderie among students, staff and their families.  Now in its second year, the event sought to build on the success of last year’s celebration with a slightly different focus.

Ryan Smith, assistant director of Student Life, coordinated GGC’s  2024 Juneteenth celebration. He said this year’s event was less structured and more organic.

“We offered more of a casual program this year,” he explained. “During last year’s inaugural event, we focused on disseminating information and

Georgia Gwinnett College’s FAFSA center helps hundreds

Since opening the Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Center at the end of April, more than 300 students have stopped by to seek help and ask questions.

“We have had a pretty steady number of students coming to our help center in the past month,” said Kimberly Jordan, executive director of Financial Aid Services at GGC. “About two-thirds of them needed help starting or completing their FAFSA form.”

The remaining students, however, came to ask questions.

Continued inflation: Are rate cuts in jeopardy?

While inflation has eased somewhat in April according to today’s Consumer Price Index Report, consumer prices continue to be elevated. That’s not good news for consumers who want to borrow money, or for the Federal Reserve, which will have tough decisions to make about interest rates.

“The Fed has signaled that they’d like to cut rates, but it’s hard for them to justify that if inflation continues to be stubborn,” said Dr. Philip Vinson, assistant professor of economics at Georgia Gwinnett College. “On the other hand, some business activity which has been on hold waiting for a rate cut may

The graduates and their families filled the arena with smiles, laughter, and a few tears during a celebration that was emotional on many levels. Each reached this milestone through determination, hard work, and sacrifice.
