S. Rebekah Myers

Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) has named S. Rebekah Myers as general counsel and chief legal affairs officer, effective May 1, 2020.

She will provide legal counsel to GGC officials and serve as a member of President Jann L. Joseph’s senior leadership team.

Myers’ career in law spans 30 years, spending nearly two decades in higher education as associate general counsel at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, where she honed her skills in higher education law and regulatory compliance. Before Mercer, she served as an in-house attorney at Central Georgia Health Systems and Equifax Services.

“I appreciate GGC’s confidence in my ability to manage and deliver a variety of legal services and advice to the college and its leadership team,” said Myers. “My priorities are to educate the GGC community about new laws and regulations to reduce risks and to help protect and enhance the school’s reputation.”

Although adept in higher education law, employment law, business transactions, contracts, negotiations, trademarks and real estate, Myers is especially interested in matters aligned with student success such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Title IX, The Jeanne Clery Act, athletics, student conduct and, more recently, legal issues concerning the coronavirus.

“One of the best parts of working in higher education is that every day is different than the day before, and you can never predict what you will be working on next,” she said.

Myers graduated from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a juris doctorate from the law school. While studying law, she received the Claude B. Barrett Legal Scholarship, was a finalist in the Best Brief competition, and was a doubles semifinalist in the Kappa Alpha Theta 1988 Tennis Classic.

She enjoys traveling, art and design, exploring new cities and local cuisine, and antiquing.
